Buckshot versus rubber for home defense
« on: September 24, 2006, 11:47:28 AM »

I have been thinking about switching to rubber balls for defense against a home intrusion in my 12G shotgun. Anyone have any experience with these or opinions?

I don't think non-lethal stuff is a good idea in your home.

I think you're right about the rubber. The first thing I would grab is a pistol but do have the option of running back and grabbing the shotgun.

I think I'll just use the rubber on the dog lol.

(Mainly cause I wouldn't shoot the dog hehe)

Don't do rubber balls or any of the other specialty ammo. In a PAW it is one thing. In the regular course of life it would be a civil liability in the extreme. That said I have some door breechers I still have to test...  Grin

that blasts an area, not a point.

The longest open area in my house is 30 ft.  I haven't patterned any 00 buck from my gun yet, but at that distance I think the shot pattern is going to be very small.

That said one of the pistols would be the first weapon I'd grab.

I don't want the shotgun for the spread, I want it for the punch!

I really don't want to mess up anything in the house so I'll just ask the home invader to kindly step outside, then we can settle it lol.

Hope that works out for you markster. Grin

What I don't like is the two handed operation of most defense shotguns I see.

Well one hand on my shotgun means I can shoot it once but then it would be awkward to chamber the next round. I know, I'll just buy an autoloader and put a pistol grip on it. Actually I'll just pull out a hand cannon and scare the poor fellow to death.  Grin

A defensive shotgun has its place, less than lethal has no place in the home owners arsenal.it is for the pro's,I have a shotgun in my bedroom and a pistol .I use  number 4 buck in the house ,just my2c   Doug

Howdy all.

Having used "less than lethal" rubber balls in correctional work I can honestly tell you that I don't want it in my home defense shotgun. I much prefer 7 1/2 Birdshot for my "less than lethal" option.

"Less Than Lethal" has it's place, but not in a home defense firearm IMHO. If you are not justified in shooting it with a "Lethal" round you probably aren't justified in shooting it with a "Less Than Lethal" round either. Plus, it opens up a Pandora's Box of civil liability and could easily be argued that you weren't in fear of your life, as you didn't use a lethal round.

Less Than Lethal has it's place in trying to control large groups of people in a mass gathering type situation. Also, lethal force is the next step, and usually their is either time, or a second person to go to the second option. That is not something one usually has the luxury of in a self defense encounter.

Ask yourself this question; "Would I want to use Pepper Spray to repel a Home Invasion?"

Pepper Spray is a commonly used less than lethal option in corrections. It is not however appropriate to stop an inmate from escaping or killing another person. As the defender in a Home Invasion that automatically wipes out a multitude of options, IMO. The invaders have changed the game from "nice peaceful evening at home" to one of sheer terror in which you are at their mercy unless you repel boarders post haste. That requires, no DEMANDS a lethal alternative, IMO.

While nobody that I know wants to kill another person, unless they are an inmate, the alternative is worse. That alternative is the death of you and or your family. Now isn't that worth using lethal force for?

Take care and stay safe.
