Why DoubleTap looks good
« on: August 22, 2007, 06:05:04 AM »

Comparing DoubleTap 380 which has a GoldDot bullet with regular Speer 380 GoldDot 90gr JHP shows a more severe profile on the expanded bullet. Note the sharp prongs in the picture.
Having higher velocity should ensure expansion in shorter barrel pistols as well.
Plus it's less expensive.

I agree that Double Tap Gold Dots are better than standard Speer Gold Dots in both performance and price.

Remington Golden Saber and Cor-Bon DPX seem to perform a bit better than either the Double Tap Gold Dot or Speer Gold Dot, but they both cost more.

I just priced each of these rounds at Midway.com and this how they fared not including shipping:
Double Tap Gold Dot    $24.95 / 50 or $0.49 ea.
Speer Gold Dot   $13.29 / 20 or $0.66 ea.
Remington Golden Saber  $16.79 / 25 or $0.67 ea.
Cor-Bon DPX   $22.49 / 20 or $1.12 ea.

It looks like the Double Tap ammo will be the next JHP for me to try out.
I always thought Corbon was missing the boat big time by making the DPX scarce and expensive.
If the Double Tap catches fire I expect DPX to come way down in price and suddenly be everywhere on shelves.

Well, my .02 is this; How much is your life worth? It would seem to me that if you spend as little as 250.00 on a P3AT, why not go all out for some awesome defensive ammo for it? I use the 102gr Remington GS in my AT and have so for years based on OG's initial test. I am not that familiar with the Double Tap although I have heard nothing but good things about it since its inception.

the final jury is still out on the DoubleTap. When we get to test it with an "official" wetpack using the P3AT, then maybe a better comparison with GS can be made. Either way, it looks like a better alternative to DPX, which is very expensive by comparison and really no better than GS for penetration and expansion. CorBon has always been the high priced ammo on the street. Granted that DPX is the best ammo CorBon has ever produced, but it's always good to see some competition to level the playing field. Another good one is the Winchester Ranger code RA380T which is now available from several online sources. More tests on it needed also.
Hope more of you will try some of the newer offerings and give us some reports.
In the meantime, don't throwaway any of your carry ammo be it GS or DPX.
We also need more tests reported on other calibers besides the 380.

I am pretty much limited to what I can find locally, I could order ammo but why pay the shipping which is usually more than sales tax. The GS is plentiful around here and is a solid performer. I guess if I could find some double tap then I may try it out.

Norf, don't bother buying any DoubleTap or Ranger. I have 2 boxes already. Just bring the P3AT to our shoot and we can test it. Maybe just bring some Rem GS if you have it to compare.

Hey guys (OG and Norf),

I can't imagine many self-defense shooting situations where clothing and bone penetration is not a big factor, so...

If you're going to do some more testing with a P-3AT may I suggest another "simulated bone" test?

I don't think it would happen, but wouldn't it be interesting if the Double Tap Gold Dots collapsed in "bone" instead of expanding like the DPX did?

Just making an early wish list... Wink

Very good point, Bobo, since I did not include GoldDot in the original bone test. We should have plenty of time to include that. Plus the Ranger also.
