Comparing PF9 to GLOCK 26
« on: March 18, 2009, 12:59:55 PM »

A friend loaned me his GLOCK 26 for testing.  I decided to weigh it with 10 rounds of hp ammo, and also my PF9 with 7 rounds of hp ammo.  The PF9 weighs a full 8 ounces less.  That's half a pound!  Plus it is thinner and rides well in the front pocket.  I may substitue the PF9 for my p3at on Sundays.  We shall see.  Here's a photo of the guns on the scale...

weigh out 4 rounds and then subtract that from the Glock 26 weight since it holds more ammo the test is slightly biased. Now, I would like to compare my Smith and Wesson CS9 which is a single stack to the PF9. When I side by side compared it to my Glock 26 it is almost dimensionally the same but it is single stack. Also it feels like it weighs almost as much if not slightly more since it is aluminum alloy and steel.

I will admit that pocket carrying my Glock 26 is not one of my favorite things to do but everything is a trade-off. For me the ability to use my Glock 19 mags or another officers Glock 17 mags in my back-up gun while working us a hugh bonus. Also, the fact that work will provide all of the practice ammo that I want along with my carry ammo is another hugh bonus. For this I think I can stand pocket carry for those few times when I may actually have to. I did find a Desantis cozy partner ankle holster which is extremely comfortable so that should suffice for hot weather formal and semi-formal wear. Otherwise I can carry it in an Aker paddle holster (kydex) with an untucked shirt the rest of the time.

Preacherman, knowing what you want to accomplish on Sunday's with pocket carry you would probably be better served with the PF9 over the Glock 27.

Yes, if I can pull it off.  The PF9 may still be a bit too large for pocket carry in a pair of thin material suit pants.  On the other hand, if I keep my suit coat on, the front of the suit coat partially covers the pants pocket.  That helps.  I will try it a few times, and if it won't work I'll go back to the p3at on Sunday mornings.

We keep adding more handgun carry permits in our Sunday morning congregation.  With all the pistols out there, maybe I can be like Obama, and go unarmed, and just allow my "secret service" to guard me.  Smiley

If I show up on Sunday with my M4 slung across my chest; would that be ok?

We'll put you in the far corner, so you can command the auditorium, in case we get invaded!

Slightly related topic.  I've been trying to figure out how to pocket carry a G27.  I've tried and tried, but just can't figure out a way to do it.  This might have to be my first IWB carry gun.  Also, I did miss a shot at a PF-9 on Thursday by 3 hours.  I've been looking for one for months and walked into a shop at 4pm on Thursday only to find out their last one walked out the door at 1pm that afternoon.  I was so close.

I carried a G27 in my front pocket of my khaki pants for a few months.  I gave it my best shot, but it's just too uncomfortable.  It can be done.  But it's not ideal.  I've also tried with a KelTec P11 and PF9, but even the PF9 is really just a bit too much.  I have finally gone back to my original pocket carry:  my Kel-Tec p3at.  It's the best I know of for front pocket carry.

I would agree that even down to an airweight j-frame, its hard to beat a p3at in the pocket. with the summer months coming, my p3at is getting more use than my pm9 these days.

I've been toting an LCP with Crimson Trace in an Uncle George's Wallet this winter.  I will have to agree, that once you go with the P3AT/LCP platform it's very difficult to move to anything else.  I may try a Nemesis for the front pocket this summer when the weather heats up.

As of July 29, 2010, I'm back to trying to pocket carry the PF9 again, at least on weekdays.  Maybe Sunday morning it will be my P32 (I sold my P3at to a fellow just getting started with guns, and he likes it a lot).

Like most of you have said, trying to pocket carry the Glock 26 presents some problems.  In winter ,I can pocket carry, but only in the pocket of certain brands of Jeans.  Other brands print badly and the angle of the pocket opening hinders a smooth draw. Since I don't own a  3at or other single stack .380,  I've decided to do IWB ,this works much better and avoids all the pocket problems. I like the extra rounds and 19 & 17 mag options  that can be used.
