.22caliber Chrony tests
« on: August 29, 2009, 04:52:27 PM »

Our grandson at Auburn Univ. visited us for the weekend which gave me a perfect chance to do the Chrony tests on .22caliber ammo I have on hand, with both the rifle and pistol. Rifle used is the Ruger 10/22,18 1/2"barrel; the pistol, my Berreta 87T, 5"barrel. Both guns with scope, from bench rest, Chrony at 9ft. Partly cloudy, 80F, no screens needed. Brandon is an excellent marksman and he did the shooting, I recorded the data.

Ammo used included solid points Win Dynapoint,40gr (with the dimple), CCI MiniMag,40gr, and Fed Premium 40gr. Hollowpoint ammo used..CCI Std Velocity 40gr, CCI Stinger 32gr, CCI Velocitor 40gr, CCI QuickShok 32gr, Federal GoldMedal Match 40gr, and Federal GoldMedal UltraMatch 40gr.
The Chrony test results are shown below. We fired 3 shots of each type of ammo. Factory stated velocity (probably with rifle barrels) is also shown for comparison. All readings are in fps.

   AMMO.......................RIFLE...............................PISTOL........................FACTORY
Win Dynapoint........1070, 1066, 1075...............989.7, 980.4, 978.3................1155
CCI MiniMag...........1217, 1218, 1180...............1078, 1067, 1108...................1235
Fed Premium..........1222, 1207, 1226...............1045, 1085, 1035...................1200
CCI Stinger.............1717, 1748, 1724...............1464, 1469, err......................1640
CCI QuickShok.......1665, 1655, 1693...............1381, 1369, 1340...................1640
CCI Velocitor..........1301, 1339, 1342...............1182, 1153, 1178...................1435
CCI Std Velocity.....1014, 1026, 1036...............914.2, 910.9, 934.8................1070
Fed Gold Match......1091. 1101, 1045...............964.9, 997.6, 1003.................1080
Fed Gold Ultra........1163, 1155, 1156...............1031, 1043, 1024...................1080

Still had time to do a little accuracy test using the pistol, target at 10yds, with some of the ammo.
POA same for each shot and no attempt to zero the scope beforehand. The attached photo shows the results.

Draw your own conclusions from this. Your results may vary. But what Josh was concerned about was finding some subsonic ammo for better accuracy with his rifle. Sonic velocity is normally considered to be around 1100fps. The only factory numbers showing subsonic were the CCI Std.Vel, and Fed GoldMedal. As noted, from our tests, you can't depend entirely on factory numbers.
FWIW,
og
