480 Ruger+others. wetpack/more
« on: November 02, 2009, 07:17:18 AM »

got a chance to do some testing this past weekend. the results where spectacular. it was a learning experiance that needs to be improved apon as it was our first attempt. both shot placment and camera work was hit and miss so not everything worked as planned.

two testing methods where employed at a distance of 15'. the oldgranpa method and the milkjug packed with wet paper through 4 layer demin. both tests showed similar penetration numbers and was well within 10%.

i have vids and photos that i will update this thread with as they come online.

the performance of the 480 Ruger was nothing less than stunning.     Grin

i will give you the numbers now and details later as i post the vids/photos.

480 Ruger Super RedHawk 9 1/2" barrel:
  • Corbon DPX 275gr. all copper Muzzle Velocity: 1550 fps, Muzzle Energy: 1467 ft. lbs/ 22", 1.00 cal     Cool
  • Speer Gold Dot 275gr. Muzzle Velocity: 1450 fps Muzzle Energy: 1284 ft. lbs./ 19", .875 cal
  • Hornady XTP 400gr.  Muzzle Velocity: 1100 fps Muzzle Energy: 1075 ft. lbs./ 30", .750 cal

Glock 23 .40S&W 4" barrel
  • Federal HST 165gr. Muzzle Velocity: 1140 fps Muzzle Energy: 470 ft. lbs./ 10.5", .750 cal (denim)
  • WWB 155gr. Muzzle Velocity: 1205 fps Muzzle Energy: 500 ft. lbs./ 8" .800 cal(core-jacket seperation/shift was evident)

1911 .45ACP 4" barrel
  • FMJ 230gr./ 15"

both the Hornady 400gr. and WWB 155gr. showed minimal weight loss by jacket petals

i hope to later retest all wetpack with chrony data.    Sad

the Hornady 400gr. XTP delivered incredible penetration and stayed together(something i had feared might not happen).

it was difficult to retrieve an expanded round as we had problems with it over penetrating the wetpack.

this is the guns owner giving it a go.

we finally managed to recover one using this set-up. penetration was an honest 30"+plus.

this round seems to be the choice if maximun penetration is required.

the Corbon DPX in 480 Ruger has got to be one of the most devastating availible reguardless of firearm/caliber. it expanded to 1" and showed remarkable penetration, even more than i had expected. i was thinking 20" in jello but it seems like it would be more given the results here.

the first two jugs exploded and i have a pic of the carnage i will post later.

there was however a problem with the round in this video. it sufferered a failure to fully expand. three of the petals did not break free and maintained position, the rest expanded normally. it did not appear to effect the terminal performance and was the only round of DPX we shot that acted like this. at first look it appears the perforation between the petals in insufficiant to allow seperation. we are contacting Corbon and will keep you updated.

we had a chance to test  the winchester USA brand 155gr. hollow point. its my understanding its the same load as the silver tip without, well the silver tip. there is little doubt it will get the job done. it showed adequate penetration and very impressive expansion of .80" into the wetpack. unfortunately i dont have a photo of the expanded bullet.

from left to right: Corbon DPX 275gr., Federal HST 165gr., Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point 275gr., Hornady XTP 400gr.

the HST was the only round of the ones depicted that passed though 4 layers of denim.
