Light load for the 454 Casull.
« on: January 11, 2010, 12:59:00 PM »

Does anyone have any Win231 loads for cast bullets? I haven't found any, and I have 500 250 grain hard cast RNFP bullets to dispose of. Cheesy

Can't you use .45 Colt loads?  Or are you going to exclusively use the .454 cases?  Just curious, I don't shoot this caliber.

Yep - I want to use the .454 cases for 2 reasons:

1: I have them already, and do not have any .45 Colt cases.
2: Shooting .45 colt in a .454 chamber can cause pressure issues for .454 Casull loads if the chamber is not cleaned beforehand.

I should add, I guestimated some loads.

I loaded up 6 each with Winchester SP primers starting at 9 grains going to 13 grains of Win231. I gotta get to the range to test it out.

Happy dance!  Grin

I got to the range yesterday, and all 5 of the loads worked great!  Unfortunately, I don't have access to a chrono that will work indoors, so I relied on my ears for velocity.   Smiley

9 and 10 grain loads were subsonic, and very pleasant to shoot.
11 grains I was just stating to hear the supersonic crack.
12 and 13 grains were definitely supersonic.

All of the Winchester Small Pistol primers looked great, with no signs of overpressure.  There was also no leading in the barrel.   Accuracy wise, I think that the 10 grain loads were the best in my gun.

I am very happy with this experiment, and now have a very economical practice load that shoots to the POA/POI as my full house loads.

Just for a comparison to my full power loads:

Winchester Small Rifle primer
Hornady 250 grain XTP Mag bullets
32.5 grains of Hodgdon L'il Gun powder
$.34 a round

Winchester Small Pistol primer
Red River 250 grain LRNFP hard cast bullets
10 grains of Winchester 231 powder
$.16 a round
