Went to the range today to punch some holes in some targets. To accoumplish this I purchased a box of Federal American Eagle 124gr FMJ. After the fireing was over I collected my brass and discovered that five of them had suffered a case failure to one extreem or another. Four of the five failed and the last just split. Has anyone else had this issue with the American Brand? Did you contact Federal and what did they tell you? Two other types of ammo were also fired at this time without any failures from the other brand names rounds. Only happened with the Fed AE Attached Thumbnails

Ive seen that case failure before on many different brands of brass, but never on new brass from the factory.
I would contact Federal ASAP with the lot number of your box of ammo & the make and model of the gun that you shot it from.

Absolutely defective brass!
In a pistol with the chamber maybe a bit oversize, normal brass would only bulge, not split open. Besides you said other ammo you fired had no problem, so it is not your pistol.
Things that make brass bad are either due to manufacture or storage.
Manufacturing that overworks the brass will work harden it to the point where it becomes brittle and will split rather than bulge.
Storage in an area where it might get exposed to ammonia will do what's called stress corrosion and leave it in a pre-brittle condition with microcracks that then split open.
Either way, Federal is at fault. And it sounds like maybe this is foreign brass they used.
Please do let us know what you find out.
cheers, og
